ArtConnect-Crystallise Holdings

Launched by VANSA in September 2011, ARTCONNECT aims to explore the imaginative reuse and animation of non-arts spaces outside of the established contemporary art circuits in Gauteng, representing a unique opportunity for young artists to develop their practice with curatorial and technical support from the VANSA network.

ARTCONNECT's Crystallise Holdings launch event took place at VANSA Gauteng's new space in the Craftsman Centre on Fox Street on 19 October. Sikhumbuzo Makandula, Fulufhelo Mobadi, Naadira Patel, Zakara Raitt & Victoria Wigzell are the five artists selected for the ARTCONNECT project. The opening event showcased their work through video presentations of each individual project and the spaces they will be working with, as well as a text-video piece based on conversations the developed during the first few weeks of the project. Crystallise Holdings was developed to represent their collective and create products which question the nature of collaboration, audience and traditional or established art spaces.

Apart from the individual projects being developed under ARTCONNECT the five young artists, together with VANSA are curating an exhibition in Yeoville, opening on Saturday the 26th of November. Yeoville Studio is a research and learning initiative by WITS School of Architecture and Planning in collaboration with the Yeoville Stakeholders Forum, the Yeoville Bellevue Community Development Trust and other local partners. The exhibition will be an interactive presentation of the community-oriented research that has been carried out over the past two years.

VANSA Gauteng is pleased to announce a new project in Johannesburg, called ARTCONNECT. The project will explore the imaginative reuse and animation of non-arts spaces outside of the established contemporary art circuits in Gauteng, and will represent a unique opportunity for the five young artists to develop their practice with curatorial and technical support from our network.Sikhumbuzo Makandula, Fulufhelo Mobadi, Naadira Patel, Zakara Raitt & Victoria Wigzell were selected through an open call to participate in ARTCONNECT's three month programme. On the occasion of the group's first public presentation, they have developed Crystallise Holdings to represent their collective and create products which question the
nature of collaboration, audience and traditional or established art spaces. This one night event serves to showcase the individual project ideas that will be developed in the next few months and also encourages participation, discussion and collaboration from the
audience.

ARTCONNECT aims to create opportunities for young and upcoming artists to research, develop and realise experimental projects in fit-for-purpose spaces, with careful consideration given to context and audience in the realisation of projects. The selected projects will be developed around spaces and places that generate their own audiences in different ways, and involve a process of research and development.
