COP17: Yarn-Bombing and Action Painting
Teams of young artists mobilized through ArtSpace Durban and the Collective developed a series of action-painting performances where painters developed finished works on canvas in public space responding to their immediate environment and the broader issues at stake during COP 17. These performances occurred in high density gatherings and the resultant artworks reflect a lively dialogue between the artists and their audiences.
The Yarn Bombing project sought to highlight the things we take for granted particularly our environment and drew the viewers eye toward the trees we never consider or the relationship between the natural and unnatural. Trees, stumps and lamposts were adorned guerilla style with black, green and white knitted “scarves”.
