VANSA OPEN OFFICE Research Residency

Open call to VANSA/Africalia interns (past and present) for a research residency in Johannesburg

VANSA will be hosting a research residency for previous participants of the VANSA/Africalia internship programme (from 2013 - 2015). The project will be held in Johannesburg, with successful applicants participating for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 3 months. The programme will run from February - August 2016. Past and present VANSA/Africalia interns based anywhere outside Johannesburg (preference will be given to those from outside Gauteng) are welcome to apply. Accommodation and a stipend will be covered by VANSA.

The intention of the programme is to expand on industry research currently being undertaken by VANSA and at the same time to provide post-internship experience in research and research methodologies. Participants in the programme will work on building research methodologies that will be implemented back in their respective provinces or home bases. Research areas might include:

  • Gathering of information and mapping of art spaces in peri-urban and rural areas
  • Research around collective resourcing, knowledge sharing and gaining insights on inheritance, viability and structure of arts organisations past and present
  • Comparative research into the activities and reach of arts organisations across South Africa, including non-profits, museums, galleries etc

To apply, please send the following information to lauren@vansa.co.za by 30 November:

  1. A short CV
  2. Reference letter from the organisation at which you did your internship
  3. One other reference letter
  4. Preferred timeframe to be in Johannesburg (for 6 weeks - 3 months between February and August 2016)
  5. A short motivation - this should be no longer than 1 page, outlining your area of interest in relation to the above mentioned research areas, and how you might use this research back home, after your time in Johannesburg

For queries please contact Lauren von Gogh on 011 402 2085 or lauren@vansa.co.za
