George Mahashe: 1 - 22 Aug at the Parking Gallery

The Artworks project, under the 2012 theme ReFiguring Women, will be launching its first series of talks on different topics about women in the art world at the Parking Gallery in August.

ReFiguring Women will run through from the 1st to the 22nd of August 2012, taking place every Wednesday, 6:30pm at the VANSA premises.

The program themes range from: A Question Power; Locating the Body; The Queer Subject Beyond Gender and Sexuality; and Tensions Between the Documentary and the Activist Dimension in the Work of Art. It promises to be an engaging experience with topical debates around the politics of gender in the arts sector.

Our first talk on Wed 1st August, will be focusing on the question of Women and Power. Four dynamic personalities in the arts will be deliberating on this topic. The panel comprises of: Thato Mogotsi (Independent Curator/Photographer), Melissa Goba (directors of Assylem Atelje), Koula Xinisteris (curator of the SABC Collection), and Antoinette Murdoch (Director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery).

The intention is not to frame these talks as academic presentations, but as informal conversation among colleagues about the current position of women in the arts. All are welcome to join in this discussion. It is hoped that, by opening up space for diverse voices, these talks will be able to address some of the many complexities that surround the notion of gendered positions.

Artworks is an annual project run as workshops to address different contributions from women in different creative industries, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela and Jabu Pereira. It is managed and funded by the Goethe Institut Johannesburg.
