VANSA at Ithuba Gallery: May/June/July 2015

The VANSA research residency at Ithuba Gallery that ran between May, June and July saw the entire office pack up and move to Braamfontein. In this time, VANSA focused on the potential for collective resourcing, knowledge sharing and gaining insights on inheritance, viability and structure of arts organisations past and present. The residency included a series of group sharing meetings, research interviews and a reading group.

Organisations and individuals that took part in the overall residency programme include:

  • Amy Watson
  • Art Smart Township
  • Artist Proof Studios
  • Bag Factory
  • Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa
  • Centre D’Art Picha
  • Clive Kellner
  • Eyethu Gallery
  • Kalashnikovv Gallery
  • Mika Conradie
  • Room Project Space
  • Sober & Lonely
  • Steven Sack
  • Vika Mjoka
  • Zanele Mashumi

During this time, A Shared Practice was published after a year long research process into arts organisation’s sense of shared practice around the country. This was a VANSA research project supported by the National Arts Council and is available to read here.

Ongoing results of the residency include further research into the history of arts organisations in Johannesburg, an Open Office Residency by Sober & Lonely and a publication to be published as part of the Territories Working Group in New Mexico later this year.
