2016 David Koloane Award

Dr David Koloane is a widely respected artist and a founder of the Bag Factory Artists Studios. His career has spanned more than 50 years and his work is housed in collections all around the world.

In a celebration of his life and his contribution to the visual arts in South Africa, the Bag Factory provides an annual award aimed at developing the creative and professional talents of young, artists, whilst kickstarting their career.

This 6 week programme aims to kickstart 3 young artists' careers, one artist will be awarded the winner of the mentorship programme. This programme is created in partnership with the Department of Sports, Arts, Recreation and Culture and the FNB Joburg Art Fair.


  • Johannesburg Based Artists with some formal arts training
  • Between the ages of 18-35 years
  • You must be available from 01 August for 6 weeks
  • Able to participate for the duration of the award


  • Lithogrpahy printing mentorship with Tamarind Institute Trained Print Master, Mr Leshoka Legate from LL Editions
  • Mentorship from the Curator & Bag Factory Artists
  • Professional training by the Bag Factory Director & Curator
  • A basic material budget
  • An opportunity to exhibit at the 2016 FNB Joburg Art Fair
  • An opportunity to become part of the Bag Factory community

The programme starts on 1 August 2016 and runs for 6 weeks. The Award is aimed at emerging artists based in the broader Johannesburg region. Please be aware that accommodation and living expenses are not provided and finalists are expected to participate in the full duration of the programme.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS is 4pm Monday 25 July 2016

How are the applications assessed?
Applications are assessed by a selection committee made up of artists, curators, academics and buyers.

Applicants must submit:

  • the completed application form - download it here
  • a substantial curriculum vitae
  • a pdf portfolio of recent work

Finalists will be announced on 27 July!
