ART LOVERS 1932 - ART COMPETITION - 2016

ART LOVERS 1932 INVITES ARTISTS TO ENTER OUR ANNUAL ART COMPETITION – ENTRIES CLOSING ON MONDAY 3 OCTOBER 2016

We are searching for technical excellence in the creation of art – to satisfy the growing need from art lovers and collectors for works that reflect a balance of skills and concept.

The competition is open for 2D works only.

Prize money:

  • R17 500 – First prize as adjudicated by the judging panel
  • R10 000 – Second prize as adjudicated by the judging panel
  • R12 500 – First prize as adjudicated by the visitors to the gallery
  • R 5 000 – Prize to the work with the most merit, submitted by an under 25 year old
  • 3 x R2 000 merit prizes

Judging panel:

  • Johan Myburg
  • Carl Jeppe
  • Loeritha Saayman

The judges will focus on the application of technical skills in the chosen medium, works that are aesthetically pleasing and of a high quality and standard. Although concept is important and works must be contemporary in nature, technical excellence in executing the work is critical.

As there is always a debate, after an art competition, on how the judges selected the winner and whether or not the public would have picked the same winner, we are giving the public an opportunity to pick a winner as well. During the first two weeks of the exhibition at the gallery, visitors to the gallery will be asked to vote for their favourite work and this year we will also be accepting online voting. Yes, one artist may win both prizes – if the judges and the public so decide. Each visitor and online voter will only be allowed one vote.

The judges will select a first and second prize winner and the voters will select the public’s choice. As the owners of the gallery support the development of young artists, there will also be a R5 000 prize for the best work submitted by an artist under 25 year old. Three merit prizes of R2 000 each will also be awarded by the judges.

Not all work received will form part of the exhibition, as the judges will also be tasked to curate the work for the exhibition, opening on Friday 21 October 2016. To ensure that the “public vote” is not influenced by the decision of the judges, all winners will only be announced at a closing event on Friday 4 November 2016.

Entry forms, with detailed conditions of entry and requirements, for this competition can be obtained from the gallery or on email request to artlovers1932@gmail.com or drop us a message on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LongstreetArtLovers1932 and may be downloaded from the Art Lovers 1932 facebook page.
