Zeitz MOCAA is seeking a Director of Communication to head up the department and proactively drive Marketing and PR for the museum.

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a public not-for-profit contemporary art museum which collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits twenty-first century art from Africa and its Diaspora; hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational and enrichment programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and guarantees access for all. Over one hundred galleries, spread over nine floors, are dedicated to a large cutting edge permanent collection; temporary exhibitions; and Centres for Art Education, Curatorial Excellence, Performative Practice, Photography, the Moving Image, and the Costume Institute.

Primary Purpose of the Job

This person will conceptualise and execute proactive marketing and public relations programmes for museum exhibitions and lead efforts for artists, donors, museum programmes, special events and acquisitions. The purpose of this role is to drive internal and external communications as well generate press coverage by building strong media relationships. The Director of Communications is the liaison between the museum’s internal departments and will coordinate all communication matters, in conjunction with the broader team. The role is responsible for all marketing and PR matters as well as leading the team.

Key Performance Areas

  • Write and implement the marketing and PR strategy for the museum.
  • Serve as the press contact for local, national and international media requests; maintain a robust network of contacts with art critics, editors, feature and freelance writers, broadcast producers and online journalists to secure extensive press coverage.
  • Oversee the production of marketing, presentation and press materials as needed.
  • Speech writing where necessary.
  • Oversee the collaboration with internal departments, curatorial and design teams and outside consultants/agencies
  • Run the operations of communications department, including sign off of collateral, press previews; press release schedule; evaluation and reporting of press coverage; identification and development of story angles, preparation of press materials, as well as KPIs for team members and the evaluation of all efforts.
  • Drive the creation of marketing collateral such as mailers, brochures etc
  • Write and edit press materials; pitch journalists; coordinate interviews; media train/prepare spokespersons; conceptualise and execute press events.
  • Spokesperson in crisis situations, responsible for the drafting of appropriate responses, for sign off from ED.
  • Represent the department at internal and external meetings. Liaise with other museum departments.
  • Database management and engagement strategy; evaluation and analytics; and reporting on activities.
  • Provide performance management, career development guidance, and development of key performance indicators (KPIs) for his/her direct reports
  • And other duties as assigned.

Job Specification: (Requirements necessary to conduct the job successfully)


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or other relevant discipline, Marketing or related field (PR/Journalism/Political Science)


  • 8+ years of relevant marketing experience/ corporate and consumer marketing communications experience
  • Strong working knowledge of marketing communication practices.
  • Art sector experience is a must with proven art writing ability. Examples of work will be requested.


  • Well developed and proven verbal/written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent public speaking ability

  • Ability to effectively multitask and coordinate a high level of activity under a variety of conditions and constraints and completion within deadlines

  • Strong computer skills with high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).

  • High level initiative with the ability to self-motivate
  • Ability to create, adapt and edit copy/content for marketing activities (advertising, brochures, etc.)
  • Excellent project management skills,
  • Ability to develop relevant and differentiated key communication messages
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships (internal/external).
  • Business acumen as demonstrated by the ability to organize, clarify and communicate complex or ambiguous ideas effectively to various internal constituents.
  • Ability to distil communications content into effective presentations for executive management, and other team members.
