SMAC Gallery Johannesburg: Junior Gallery Assistant

SMAC Gallery invites applications for a Junior Gallery Assistant for its Johannesburg Gallery.

This is a part-time administrative position under the general supervision of the Gallery Administrators and Gallery Director.

The successful candidate will be dynamic, presentable, mature and have a strong work ethic. A keen interest in, and knowledge of contemporary art and the industry is a must. Strong communication and administration skills are essential, as is a desire and commitment to develop the position further.

Main tasks include opening and closing the gallery, receiving visitors and fielding enquiries, assisting with the smooth running and day to day management of the gallery, providing administrative, logistical and project support, photographing and cataloguing artworks, keeping records and storeroom management.

Duties Include the following:


  • Administrative duties include fielding enquiries, artwork logistics, publication stock list
  • Client liaison, sales, enquiries
  • Updating mailing lists and maintaining communication with visitors and clients
  • Updating artist information
  • Proof reading texts and proposals

Social Media

  • Compiling social media content and schedule
  • Archiving articles and features

Exhibitions & Projects

  • Artist liaison
  • Production for exhibitions, sourcing materials for artists
  • Gallery prep, exhibition set-up along with


  • Artwork photographing and cataloguing
  • Storeroom management
  • Deliveries and collections
  • Additional tasks include setting up exhibitions, as well as artist and client liaison and basic graphic design.
  • Such tasks require good organizational, ability to work well under pressure and an independence that does not prevent working well within a team.

The position is in the Johannesburg gallery.


  • Applicable Tertiary qualification. Fluent English and Computer Literate.
  • Additional: Knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop. Drivers license will be an advantage.

Remuneration: Negotiable depending Experience.
