Two vacancies at Wits School of Fine Arts (WSOA)

The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for 2 positions: Senior Lecturer/Lecturer and Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer of Fine Arts in the Wits School of Arts. The successful candidates will join a dynamic group of artists and academics in the Wits School of Arts, an interdisciplinary school comprising Fine Arts, History of Art, Theatre and Performance, Music, Film and Television, Digital Arts, Drama for Life, and Cultural Policy and Management. Artists of senior national / international standing with extensive academic experience are invited to join this team. 1. Senior Lecturer/Lecturer position

Qualification and Experience:

A PhD and /or a highly developed teaching, research and artistic profile are required for appointment at the Senior Lecturer level. Experience in academic management, and a significant national teaching, research and artistic profile are also required. For appointment at the Lecturer level, a PhD or definite progress towards this higher degree, and /or a national teaching, research and artistic profile are required. Both positions, particularly at Senior Lecturer level, require a proven postgraduate supervision track record, proven creative research / research publication record in the discipline of Fine Arts, and an interest in questions related to curriculum development and transformation. The position requires expertise in areas that speak broadly to contemporary practice/discourses/ curating/media in the context of South Africa and the African continent and related networks. Applicants with experience in the disciplines of Sculpture, Drawing and Painting are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • The successful applicant would be expected to take on leadership positions within the Fine Arts Division (e.g. Divisional and School portfolios)
  • Planning and managing the academic and research programme of the Division
  • Teaching in the undergraduate programme
  • Supervising postgraduate students at honours, masters and doctoral level
  • Coordinating courses in Fine Arts on the undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Conducting and contributing to high level research and creative practice
  • Managing and developing the studio programme to a professional level
  • Engaging with a range of areas and public activities of the Wits School of Arts
  • Contributing to the work of the School and Division as a whole
  • Contribute to fundraising strategies for the Division

2. Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer

  • Conducting and contributing to high level research and creative practice
  • Managing and developing the studio programme to a professional level
  • Engaging with a range of areas and public activities of the Wits School of Arts
  • Contributing to the work of the School and Division as a whole
  • Contribute to fundraising strategies for the Division
  • Participating in committees at Faculty level
