Opportunity Description

Khwela Factory call for craft makers and designers in South Africa to participate in a craft strategy interview for the Dialogue Conference on 24, 25, and 26 October 2018. Limited space is available for attending this conference and subject to an invitation from the Department of Arts and Culture. 10-minute interviews are conducted with each craft practitioner who expresses an interest to participate in the growth of the sector. All interviews will be conducted between 9am and 5pm on the following days:
5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24 and 25 September 2018 Only craft makers and designers will be interviewed.

Opportunity description:

The results from the interviews will be consolidated and incorporated into a presentation at the October Craft Sector Dialogue Conference.

Motsumi Makgale Makhene is the strategy and policy expert for this craft strategy process that began on 1 August 2018 and ends in March 2019.

Motsumi Makhene has over 40 years’ experience as an arts educator, Further Education and Training Policy analyst and strategist. He has 24 years’ experience in management and organisational development. He is currently the Executive Director of the Funda Community College. Before this, he was the Principal and Chief Accounting Officer of the Central Johannesburg Colleges. He worked as a Deputy and then Executive Director of the Abt Associates (South Africa), a USAID funded development project responsible for Technical Assistance to the Department of Education’s FET Branch on policy and strategy development support and science education modelling. Khwela Factory is passionate about managing sustainable community development
projects. The objectives of this craft strategy would be to increase:

  • Access to information on available opportunities and programmes
  • Access to training and skills development
  • Access to raw materials for craft opportunities
  • Access to funding
  • Focus on the value of indigenous African knowledge systems for the craft sector
  • Improve institutional capacity for executing the DAC’s work in the craft sector
