Funded by Nedbank and the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), supported by The Market Theatre Foundation and administered by the ACT, the ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Scholarships Programme strives to nurture young talent and provide tertiary education opportunities to young people who have their sights set on pursuing performance and visual arts training. Scholarships of R50 000 in the categories of visual art, singing, acting, musical theatre and dance are granted annually through this programme.
Since 2009, the ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Scholarships Programme has awarded scholarships to 31 young people, a contribution with a collective worth of R3 million in tertiary education funding.
The opportunities are open to young South Africans older than 18 and under 25 years old who are currently in or have completed their matric.
More than a scholarship competition
The ACT|DALRO|Nedbank Scholarships programme brings young people from different backgrounds together for a learning experience which is hugely enriching and fosters lifelong friendships. They have the opportunity to work with professionals in their prospective industries and to gain practical and professional skills. Whether they win a scholarship or not, they take away a transformative experience which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
The Performing Arts Scholarships experience
Hundreds of applicants are auditioned countrywide in June and July each year. From these, three finalists are selected in each category. The selected finalists spend a week in Johannesburg working with trained professionals in the state of the art Market Theatre Laboratory. The week culminates in a final showcase at the historic Market Theatre, in front of friends, family and an independent panel of judges
