Bloemfontein is set to come alive with possibilities as it welcomes the inaugural Mangaung Art Fair (MAF) from 1 – 3 March 2019.
Launched in 2017 during the Vrystaat Kunstefees, the Mangaung Art Fair is an inspired, curated and artist- centred exhibition platform to showcase local and international interdisciplinary Art forms ranging from the Visual Arts, to Bespoke Crafts, to Food Art.
Nestled in the heart of South Africa, Bloemfontein will seize the occasion to put the city and the Free State Art landscape on the map through this integral and key event for the city’s local art scene. This Art showcase will endeavour to fuse the historical narratives of Bloemfontein with the contemporary South African Art scene by representing the many cultures and languages that have descended in the Free State.
A first of many instalments to come, the Mangaung Art Fair is a necessary event to access, celebrate and leverage the cultural capital that is our Art with a widespread, diverse audience.
Calling all visual artists residing in South Africa to apply for Mangaung Art Fair. Artists can join the exciting venture, brought to you by Sematsatsa Library, a Bloemfontein-based creative consultancy founded in 2013. Together with a board of phenomenal individuals; the Mangaung Art Fair will take place in various exciting spaces in Mangaung.
Mangaung Art Fair 2018 will comprise of the following Key exhibition spaces:
- ‘The People shall govern’ – Below the towers
This particular exhibition space will be a photographic exhibition looking at the photographer as a collaborator in the process of the work. We invite documentary photographers within South Africa, with special invitation to Free State artists to send their work to us.
- ‘Towering above the Hill – The Nelson Mandela Legacy’
We would like to co-curate an exhibition with 20 artists who will, in the end, submit 100 works in total. The particular exhibition will be at the centre of the Fair, rendering a snapshot into the life and times of the figure towering above Bloemfontein. In full consultation with the Head Curator, the Fair’s board and Director will select work that will encompass the very creative nature of the exhibition space, envisioned under the above theme.
