KZNSA Gallery in Durban is looking for a Curator to join the team. The Curator works closely with the Director and the Exhibition sub-committee to manage the gallery on the ground. We are looking for a candidate that has relevant art, curatorial and administrative experience, communicates well and is adaptable to a dynamic environment.
Salary: Dependent on experience, mid-level position
Job Type: permanent with 3 months’ probation
Hours: Tuesday – Friday 08h00 – 17h00, Saturday 09.00 – 16h00, with overtime for exhibition openings and when needed

The role
- Develop concepts for exhibitions and the exhibitions programme
- Manage the exhibition calendar including ad hoc events in the gallery
- Manage the day-to-day operations, administration and staff at the gallery
- Build relationships with artists, and consign their work for the online gallery
- Manage a database of collectors, engaging them and keeping them informed of work for sale
- Manage all contractual agreements including artists’ contracts, exhibition service providers, etc.
- Manage logistics for gallery operations – installations, shipping, artwork storage, materials, etc. – plus related paperwork – condition reports, delivery and collection notes, loan agreements
- Oversee maintenance of gallery facilities and exhibition equipment
- Programming and operations of the KZNSA LAB / education programme
- Overseeing all publicity and marketing for the gallery
- Manage participation in art fairs, and oversee logistics and inputs for these
- Write funding proposals and oversee fundraising initiatives
- Growing KZNSA’s national and international profile
Requirements
- Postgraduate degree in Visual Art, curating or History of Art
- Experience in gallery administration
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign preferred
- Social media and web content management experience essential
- Collaborative approach to teamwork
- Excellent interpersonal skills when engaging with visitors, artists and collectors
- Driver’s license, own vehicle preferred
