The University of South Africa wishes to commission the painting of a portrait for an office bearer, in line with its Policy:
Portrait Commissioning and Transfer. Accordingly, the University hereby invites proposals from competently qualified and
eligible artists to be considered for the commissioning for the painting of the portrait. Artists must reside in Gauteng or
be willing to stay in Gauteng for the duration of the portrait development and/or painting.

Phases of the selection:
1. Application requirements:
- An abbreviated curriculum vitae: maximum two pages.
- Three digital (jpg format) images of oil paintings, at least one of which must be a portrait.
- Applications to be emailed to DepRegGovernance@unisa.ac.za , copying Mr Nicodemus Maredi, Acting
Deputy Director: Registrar Strategic Support and Coordination, email maredin@unisa.ac.za . - Closing date for the proposals is Monday, 04 October 2022 at 13:00. No late entries will be accepted.
The outcome of the shortlisting of applicants to be interviewed will be communicated within the following week.
2. Requirements for shortlisted candidates:
- The candidate should present three oil paintings, at least one of which must be a portrait, at Muckleneuk Campus, Pretoria. The specific venue will be provided in the shortlisting letter. The date and time shall be communicated to successful candidates within two weeks after the interviews.
- All artworks must be two-dimensional and no sculptures, photographs, or digital artworks are allowed.
- Shortlisted candidates will be requested to make a 15-minute presentation about their professional practice to the
panel. Candidates are welcome to present catalogues of previous exhibitions.
The selected artist for the commission will be notified on or before 14 October 2022.
3. Commission requirements:
- Meetings with the panel
- Photographic sessions with the sitter
- The portrait must be executed in oil paint on stretched canvas. Format approximately 1150 X 900mm – 1260 x
1000mm. - The painting style must be realistic and must follow conventions of the existing academic portraits.
- Commissioning panel will conduct the first studio visit in the first week of November 2022.
- Provisional deadline for completion is 31 December 2022.
- Further details will be discussed with the selected artist
- The UNISA procurement office will draft an agreement comprising of payment, deadlines and conditions.
