WHAT? During 2 days 1/2 workshop, artists and graphic designers are invited to experiment the creation of different forms of visuals (posters, infographic, maps) in collaboration with members from the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO). ARO is a Johannesburg based organisation of informal reclaimers who collect recyclables from Johannesburg’s streets and landfills. There are an estimated 6,000 reclaimers who do this work in Johannesburg. The visuals will aim at raising public awareness on the work of informal recyclers in Johannesburg.
HOW? Designers and reclaimers will have 2 days 1⁄2 to exchange their mutual knowledge – knowledge of recycling/knowledge of the visual language – in order to create relevant visuals with meaningful messages. The workshop will be facilitated by a team of professionals’ recyclers from ARO, as well as professional graphic designers, and workshop facilitators.
WHO? The call is aimed at creatives that have an interest in recycling and in the part that informal reclaimers play in Johannesburg. The participant should be open to experimenting crafting graphic designs while trying to answer a specific demand from the recyclers. The outcome is to co-produce informative visual for the general public. The visuals created on this occasion will be accessible in an open source way.
WHEN? The workshop will take place at Tshimologong Precinct (41 Juta St, Braamfontein) the 3rd and 4th of October (all day long) and the 5th of October (in the morning).
Professional participants will be offered an artist fee.
Creative materials, breakfast and lunch will be offered on-site.
