This is a technician’s post in the Centre for Visual Art, School of Arts. The post entails maintaining the ceramics studios, supplies and equipment for safe use by visual arts students, and providing technical and administrative support to lecturers in ceramics.

The successful applicant will be responsible for maintaining and ordering stocks of materials, mixing and recycling of clays and glaze materials, attending to equipment maintenance, and monitoring students’ safe use of equipment (kilns, throwing wheels, fume cupboards, etc.). He or she should have the technical ability to carry out first line fault finding and troubleshooting. He or she will help to supervise cleaning, and carry out specialist cleaning of surfaces and equipment. On occasion, he or she may assist undergraduate students with use of equipment during student practical sessions, and with setting up of exhibitions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3 years relevant practical experience in a ceramics studio or a relevant workshop environment.
  • A relevant post-school technical or arts qualification
  • Basic technical maintenance skills and experience, and the ability to supervise suppliers when major mechanical and/or electrical equipment repairs and maintenance are required.
  • Basic administration such as keeping records of stocks, and obtaining quotes, making orders and receiving deliveries.
  • Physical fitness, due to the strenuous demands of the work.
  • Familiarity with safety requirements and procedures in workshop and studio environments.
