The Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University offers a comprehensive postgraduate offering all the way through to doctoral level, including TWO full-time (1-2 years) research-based Masters degrees in either Visual Studies (thesis only) or Visual Arts (integrated theory/practice).

The MASTERS IN VISUAL ARTS (MAVA) program offers an opportunity for specialized postgraduate research in studio practice within and across Fine Art, Visual Communication Design, Illustration, and contemporary Jewellery Design.


  • Integrated practice-based/led methodology
  • Independent, studio-based and/or socially engaged research supported by lectures, seminars and studio crits.

Successful applicants will demonstrate

  • appropriate academic qualifications
  • relevant professional experience
  • a suitable research proposal supported by a portfolio of recent work.

Both degrees produce highly sought-after graduates in a wide range of careers in the creative industries including the contemporary art sector; curatorship; design; film production; academia; heritage & tourism sectors; auctioneering and art-based investment; arts administration; education and journalism.
