Opportunity Description

Museum Marketing Coordinator – 3 year contract post

This 50% position will suit a dynamic and self-motivated individual with formal marketing qualifications and experience, and a sincere interest in the visual arts and art museums. Hours are Mon to Fri 8h30 to 12h30. The appointment is subject to a 6-month probation period.


To market the museum to attract growing numbers of visitors to exhibitions, education programming and events.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Conceptualising (in conjunction with other WAM staff) and implementing marketing campaigns that keep WAM marketing fresh and relevant
  • Manage social media platforms
  • Write, design and disseminate communication materials including press releases and newsletters for different museum audiences
  • Adapt marketing materials for various communication channels
  • Update website
  • Maintain customer relationship management database
  • Liaise with Wits marketing division
  • Liaise with media


  • A degree or equivalent diploma in marketing and/ or communications and at least two years marketing experience, promoting the arts
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills and attention to detail
  • Photographic, graphic design (Photoshop or similar), database, website management and social media skills
  • Sincere Interest in the arts and museums

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, ability to multi-task and prioritise effectively
  • Networking skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a small, busy, passionate and dedicated team
  • Friendly and professional telephone manner
  • Willingness to attend occasional after-hours museum events such as exhibition openings and public programming for media networking purposes
