About the course:
Creative Process forms part of our One year course in Professional Photography, and is dedicated to providing students with the necessary skill; experience, knowledge and insight to further pursue a life in meaningful, creative and critically engaged image-making.

The course aims to provide students with:

  • An insight into the creative process
  • The skills to produce a personal body of work
  • An understanding of the photographic medium as a form of art
  • An exploration of the photographic medium as one of the process
  • The ability to conceptualise and develop photographic work by means of critical reflection
  • The development of an eye for detail in making and presenting work
  • The development of an awareness of contemporary local and international photographic practice
  • The ability to express themselves and communicate their observations, thoughts, ideas and or feelings.

Key to this course is the on-going nurturing and development of students’ creative process as involving continual experimentation, exploration, discovery, creative play, imagination, active learning and critical reflection. The course aims to develop, in each student, an awareness of their personal visual language and creative process, whilst developing an understanding of the photographic medium illustrated in the production of a personal body of work at the end of the course. This is a co-taught subject and the main lecturer is supported by an additional lecturer in consultations and presentation of the photographic darkroom component of the course.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualities and skills:

  • Extensive knowledge and sensitivity of the theory related to the creative process
  • Be a practicing artist
  • Be comfortable with open‐ended assignments
  • Be able to engage in the creative process in a context outside of their own expertise or experience
  • Be able to build the repertoire of students by experiencing and analysing existing creative work
  • Be able to provide critical feedback on personal projects
  • Can guide students to consider their own creative process
  • Be willing to engage in activities that involve risk, failure, and recovery
  • Sound technical knowledge of photography (digital and analogue, including darkroom processes)
  • Experienced in developing course content, overviews and course notes
  • Ability to provide outstanding support to students
  • Ability to assess, inspire and motivate students’ progress consistently
  • Creative thinker dedicated to the further development of their students
  • Excellent planning, administration and time management skills
  • Responsible and ethical in their conduct
  • Ability to collaborate and work as part of a core teaching staff
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work with people of all ages and background
  • Excellent communication skills, able to make people feel welcome, heard and understood
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Computer proficiency – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Reliable attendance record

Level of education and work experience

  • An honours degree in photography or Fine art/Visual art specialising in Photography
  • A minimum of five years’ professional and/or teaching experience

Duration of contract:

  • Term 1 – 3: 2 x 3 Hour sessions per week
  • Term 4: Ongoing consultation
  • Period of Contract: March 2021 – December 2021, renewable for two years after 2021.
