Opportunity Description

The role available is for the position of gallery assistant at The Mixed Reality Workshop (TMRW) in Rosebank, Johannesburg. TMRW is a platform for artists and art audiences to access technology through a curated programme of exhibitions, talks, performances, residencies, and participatory events. TMRW works closely with artists, in a collaborative way to realise and create creative experiences using a range of different technologies.

You’ll be in an administrative position working closely with the team to coordinate the daily operations of the gallery and plan or produce future exhibitions, experiences, and events both in the gallery space and online.

We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about technology and eager to learn, enthusiastic, enjoys client service, with a great sense of detail, and works well delivered. A willingness and capacity for this, as well as a friendly demeanour, are important. The successful applicant will join a dedicated team of high-functioning individuals in a position allowing for on-the-job training.

The responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Front of house, client interface – welcoming visitors and answering enquiries
  • Assisting with exhibition planning, installation, and artwork production
  • Assisting at gallery events, after hours
  • Artwork administration (art handling/packaging)
  • Correspondence with artists
  • Assisting with the smooth running and day-to-day management of the gallery
  • General operational and administrative support, including artwork photography and photo editing
  • Inventory management and stockroom management
  • Maintaining and updating gallery database
  • Writing about exhibitions
  • Conducting research on projects and drafting proposals
  • Maintaining and updating gallery databases


  • This is a paid part-time opportunity, with a three-month probation period

Working Hours:

  • Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 – 16:00 (schedule is dependent)


  • Remuneration based on experience level
