Opportunity Description

A residency (of up to 3 months) for artists from Southern Africa in Switzerland, or conversely, for Swiss artists in a Southern African country, provides the chance to gain a broad insight into a different cultural environment. The aim of the residency is to find inspiration, establish networks and contemplate new projects and collaborations with local partners and artists. In addition to a place to work and accommodation, we will provide specific advice and practical support in navigating this different context. The Swiss Arts Council covers the costs of travel, insurance and per diem expenses. Production costs can be covered to some extent, upon request. Applicants may benefit three times in total from a Pro Helvetia studio residency.

The Southern African region includes the following countries:
Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

We work with a network of organisations that can host residencies in different urban centres in Switzerland and across the Southern African region. We look to customise each residency according to the needs of the individual arts professionals as far as possible. Residency applicants are invited to consider but are not limited to, the below list of partner organisations.
