Opportunity Description

Established in 2016 by the late Ugandan born artist, Benon Lutaaya, THE PROJECT SPACE (TPS) is a non-profit cultural laboratory dedicated to the advancement of contemporary African art, and the promotion of the culture of entrepreneurship among young Africans. It’s an institutional platform centred on creating spaces and improving opportunities for African artists and young entrepreneurs.

The Space embodies values of patronage as a context and framework to encourage creativity, innovation, collaboration, resource-sharing and cultural production among contemporary African artists, and creative entrepreneurs, particularly womxn – with a special focus on self-sustainability. This residency programme allows artists, local or international at any levels in their career to apply for residencies of 1 – 4 months. Artists source their own sponsorship or funding for the residency.

Applications are accepted all throughout the year, but residencies are awarded as space permits, given the applicant’s preferred schedule. Our programme affords the artist the opportunity, time, and freedom to work in dynamic, creative space, founded on the basis of learning by exchange; artists teach, encourage and influence each other, ultimately enhancing their artistic practice. Our residency artists enjoy continued support and exposure of their work through our media platforms, selected exhibitions at major local and
International Art Fairs and other exchange projects for up to 1 year.

Located within the heart of the Johannesburg, THE PROJECT SPACE lies within a dynamic and the uniquely integrated creative urban complex that houses several artist studios (mid-career and established artists) and art galleries.
