Opportunity Description

The Michaelis School of Fine Art is looking to appoint a Senior Technical Officer in Printmedia to provide technical support for staff and students in the Printmedia Section. The primary function of the Senior Technical Officer is to provide technical support, administration, maintenance and organisation for the Printmedia section. This includes support for academic staff in the teaching of projects, assisting students from undergraduate to postgraduate level in technical problem solving with their practical studiowork for projects, and technically assisting staff with research projects.

  • Degree or Diploma in Fine Art with specialisation in printmaking
  • 3 to 5 years workshop experience
  • Skills in Etching, Lithography, Screenprinting, Relief printing and related Photo Processes

Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software is recommended. Experience of working on an offset lithography proofing press will be advantageous.


The Senior Technical Officer must have a thorough working knowledge of the principles, technical processes and printing procedures involved in the four processes taught in the printmaking section – etching (intaglio), lithography (planographic), relief and screenprinting – as well as related digital skills. A basic knowledge of bookbinding is also required. The Senior Technical Officer is responsible for all aspects of health and safety in the workshops including instruction in the hazards and safe use of presses, machinery, chemicals and solvents. The Senior Technical Officer would be required to serve as a Health and Safety officer and undergo training in first aid.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits is between R378, 433 – R445, 215
