Opportunity Description

SSA – DESIGN FUTURE DIGITAL LABS SOUTH AFRICA
REF NO: BC/02023

Design Futures: Digital Lab 2021-22 is a creative economy project that offers South African digital content creators/filmmakers, an opportunity to develop experiential and provocative narratives around the area of sustainable fashion practises and climate address. We believe that by working with the next generation of artists and creative practitioners in SA with future forward digital technologies, we will equip them with innovative tools to tackle today’s challenges.
Digital technology in this sector is developing quickly, opening new possibilities for creative experiences while disrupting old models. Shifts in the global economy, technology, and the lived experience of COVID, as well as rising urbanisation are causing rising inequality alongside these new opportunities. The critical need to contribute to the global narrative around sustainability and climate with local SA voices using collaborative approaches has been identified.

The aim of the programme is to challenge and expand on digital production in XR (extended reality) by utilising; new creative technologies and software, international distribution channels, exhibition platforms for showcase exchanges and to explore new markets for sustained livelihoods.

The project will bring together a finally selected group through an open call process of 16 digital content creators and producers already working in South Africa to unite them as a single Lab network that enables innovative work practice in XR modalities.  The thematic outcome of the projects will be centred around sustainability narratives in fashion and design. The digital Lab therefore must include skills and exchange both on technical production as well as rigour around climate and storytelling approaches in sustainability. The partners will work with the 16 individuals in the Design lab to explore their worlds through immersive, interactive story principles including the use of Extended reality (XR), and other digital media skills.

With Sustainability and Climate being at the forefront of the content design interrogation, principles and broader understanding of this area will also be shared and engaged with through direct interaction with some of SA local emerging and established fashion designers innovating in sustainability. The Digital Lab takes on an outcome-based approach with creators building towards developing treatments outlining their proposed approach. They may do this in pairs to make content which will be presented for review. 8- 10 final projects will be selected to receive production grants to realise this ambition.
