The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is proud to announce that it will once again be hosting and presenting the annual national Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards (TMFAA). This is the 33rd year that the TMFAA will be held. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious arts awards in the country.

The Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards (TMFAA) is a contemporary fine arts competition that seeks to inspire the passion that the late acclaimed resistance artist Thami Mnyele had for art. The TMFAA stands out as one of the most unique competitions. The rules are open to any kind of media and limitless scale; this allows various forms of the artistic oeuvre to be unearthed. The entered artworks are from a plethora of young and professional’s artists. This competition is free from traditional rules of galleries and museums system, as it generates a different kind of approach in its flexible approach. Over the years the artworks selected by the adjudication panel has improved in quality and aesthetic value.

The competition caters for artists of from 18 years and above, from all over South Africa, producing various media of artworks. Variouas awards are presented to winners in each of these categories. The Ekurhuleni prize; awarded to the best work submitted by an artist who hails from this region. A total amount of R190 000,00 prize money is awarded spread across all prizes as indicated below. There is an additional prize for the “Lizamore and associates Mentorship Programme and Solo Exhibition” and a new prize August House Emerging Residency Artist Award.

Entry fee; R50 per artwork entered.

The following prizes will be awarded:

  • First Prize – R 100 000.00
  • Ekurhuleni Prize – R 60 000.00
  • Honourable Mention – R 10 000.00

Lizamore & Associates Mentorship Programme and Solo Exhibition and R10 000.00 Prize Money August House Emerging Residency Artist Award (3-Months Artist Residency Programme) and R10 000.00 Prize Money

An online exhibition catalogue will be shared on the City of Ekurhuleni’s website.

How to Apply

Artists are permitted only 4 entries per artwork at R50 per entry. All entries must be submitted through the City Of Ekurhuleni website. A link for the portal will be available on the City of Ekurhuleni website. The competition website is open for uploading entries on the 26th of July 2021. All entries close on 31 August 2021 at 16:00. No late submissions will be accepted. It is essential when registering online and uploading your artwork that all fields are completed. Failure to complete all fields will result in your entry been disqualified.
