Gallery Chosi invites practicing artists between the ages of 18 of 25 to apply for “The Visual Art of Creating Beyond the Apartheid Imagination” programme. This programme aims to identify and empower artists marginalised due to their gender, location, and other factors, helping them envision themselves as global artists capable of contributing to the world canon. We encourage artists from marginalised backgrounds to join a programme that will assist them in creating artworks with a philosophical approach, capable of capturing global imagination.
Number of Artists: Three artists will be selected for the programme, consisting of two female artists and one male artist. The programme will run from August 26th to September 30th and will be conducted online and in Johannesburg. Artists from all over South Africa are encouraged to apply.
Benefits for Selected Artists:
- Enhanced Critical Thinking: Participants will develop a more critical approach to their artistic practice, enabling them to analyse and reflect on their work more effectively.
- Increased Networking Opportunities: The programme will provide marginalised emerging artists with opportunities to network and connect with other artists, curators, and industry professionals at the Art Joburg Fair 2024.
- Publishable Critical Writings: Critical reviews written by participants will be publishable, providing them with a platform to share their thoughts and perspectives with a wider audience.
- Inspiration for New Artworks: Exposure to the Johannesburg Art Fair and the critical review process will inspire participants to create at least one new artwork upon their return to their hometowns.
- Long-Term Impact on Artistic Practice: The programme will have a long-term impact on the artistic practice of participants, enabling them to approach their work with a more critical and entrepreneurial mindset.
- Stipend: Each selected artist will receive a stipend to support their participation in the programme.
