SMAC Gallery is hiring a Gallery/Administration Assistant in Johannesburg and a Research Intern in Cape Town.
1. SMAC Gallery Johannesburg: Gallery/Administration Assistant
SMAC is looking for a high highly motivated individual to join their team on a full-time basis. This position requires a significant amount of hands-on work and focuses on administration and project management A willingness and capacity for this, as well as strong administrative capacity and friendly demeanour, are important. A driver’s license is essential.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the smooth running and day to day management of the gallery
- Receiving visitors and fielding routine enquiries
- General operational and administrative support
- Liaising with artists
- Assisting in exhibition production
- Maintaining gallery databases and archives
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm & Saturday 10:00am to 3:00pm
Salary: Dependent on experience
The applicants must be available to begin as soon as possible.
2. SMAC Gallery Cape Town: Research Intern
SMAC is looking for a high highly motivated individual to join their team on a part-time basis. Applicants should be detail orientated, and preferably perfectionist in nature. This is a research-based position, and while the successful applicant will learn the practicalities of working in a gallery, primary responsibilities will be with content production and management.
Responsibilities Include:
- Familiarising oneself with SMAC Artists
- Updating, generating and managing content
- Archiving and layout
- Writing and editing content
- Basic website alterations
- Knowledge of contemporary art
- Administration of information
Requirements
- Skilled and Proficient in English Language and Grammar.
- Adept at professional communication and group work.
- Accomplished research skills (google; Jstor; library; e-books etc…).
Mac proficient. - Compulsory Programme Proficiency: Microsoft Word; Adobe Photoshop & InDesign.
- Useful Programme Proficiency: WordPress; Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Lightroom/Bridge; Microsoft Excel.
- An interest in current social and art discourse.
- Initiative for writing.
- The desire to work in a gallery environment.
- Neat and presentable appearance.
- Applicable tertiary qualification
Hours:
This position is a part-time position, with a minimum of 24 hours a week, five of which should be on a Saturday (10 am to 3 pm). Remaining hours are negotiable, depending on availability and requirements. This is a set project-based internship and overtime may be required in order to complete the task in the time required. The internship will be for four months. Remuneration commensurate with qualifications and experience.
