Opportunity Description

TAF Unearthed is a selection of fresh artistic voices from the South African art scene. TAF Unearthed is a 6-month part-time mentorship and professional practice programme, culminating in a group exhibition at the Turbine Art Fair in July 2022. The mentorship programme will take on 10 South African artists in the developing stage of their career, aged 18-35 years, and will focus on conceptual, professional and process-based development.

Artists will be mentored by select industry professionals and will participate in a series of workshops aimed at developing their practice. The mentorship includes individual critique and feedback of the participant’s body of work from established art mentors as well as the peer group. Artists are encouraged to be open to constructive critique.

This programme is aimed at artists who have limited professional experience, are not represented by galleries, have not previously participated in art fairs or had solo exhibitions. Artists will be required to commit to the full period of the programme and be present at the fair.

Artists may apply in the medium of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation and new media. Final selection of artists and artworks is subject to the Fair management and selection committee. Turbine Art Fair reserves the right to exclude artists from the final exhibition should the standard and quality of the work or artist’s behaviour not be in line with the fair’s standards.

APPLICATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Selected artists will be announced in February 2023, programme will commence thereafter. Turbine Art Fair takes place from 27-30 July 2023.

Artists must be available for the full period of the programme and must be able to be based in Johannesburg for part of the programme period. Accepted artists cannot participate in any other projects or programmes during this time.
