Minimum Requirements

  • A Masters degree in Fine / Visual Art
  • A minimum of four years of lecturing/teaching experience
  • The teaching of Painting is a requirement

  • Excellent teaching skills and good interpersonal skills as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Enthusiasm and passion for the Visual Arts

Recommendations:

  • Teaching experience, preferably at a Higher Education Institution
  • A track record of post-graduate research supervision and publication in the relevant field
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. teaching evaluation or relevant portfolio
  • Innovative teaching techniques incorporating technology
  • Must have an active artmaking/exhibitions profile and/or Curatorial practice
  • Ability to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate modules

Job Specification

The Department of Visual Art is part of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture on the Bunting Road Campus of the University of Johannesburg. The Department has a long and proud history of producing artists and academics who have recognised national/international profiles and who have contributed greatly to the diverse visual industries of South Africa. We are looking for an energetic and vibrant specialist in painting to join our team of educators in the Visual Art Department as a Painting Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and managing all the Painting modules in both the under and postgraduate programmes in the Department
  • Teach in the Studio Practice modules in the undergraduate and Honours programmes in the Department
  • Supervise / co-supervise Masters-level students
  • Contribute to Departmental administration (manage modules, oversee year programmes and fulfil other departmental administrative duties)
  • Actively contribute to the Department’s research / artistic profile
  • Must be competent to teach in Undergraduate and Honours Painting modules and
  • Undergraduate and Honours Studio Practice modules
  • Able to supervise Masters student projects and
  • Participate in the Masters Seminars / Critique programmes
  • Present conference papers and
  • Write research articles for publication
  • Positively contribute to the Department’s national/international standing and reputation
